I am writing this letter to help everyone understand my position as Superintendent of McLoud Public Schools. My first and most important responsibility is the health and safety of every student and staff member in the district. Learning cannot take place if staff and students do not feel safe. In March of this year COVID-19 hit Oklahoma. The federal and state leaders, business owners, county leaders, and superintendents faced a situation they had never seen before. The state shut down.
The McLoud administrative team immediately went to work to ensure the safest possible plan to return to school. We have many students in the district attending in-person instruction. Masks are required for students grade 4-12, staff members are required to wear masks, hand washing stations have been placed throughout buildings, and extra care and precaution is being taken by our staff to clean and sanitize. We do however, have over 400 students in the district who have chosen our distance learning option. This year is far from normal.
Sports were also included in our plan as we believe these activities play an important role for our students. Currently, masks and social distancing are recommended for our spectators. Please keep in mind that a number of schools in the state are limiting the number of fans, requiring masks, and in some cases cancelling entire seasons. We are monitoring this ever-changing situation and may have to make changes to our current athletic plan.
I have been in education for over 30 years serving as a teacher, coach, and administrator. This is by far the most difficult year I have ever experienced. I got into this field because I truly love education. Nothing makes me happier than to be around students and staff. However, I have a responsibility to ensure safety for this district. That being said, I have been in close contact with school leaders and colleagues throughout the state. All are making difficult decisions on a daily basis. One of those decisions is cancelling Homecoming parades. I simply cannot guarantee the safety of those involved. Working and riding on floats would violate social distancing. Furthermore, we could not require the wearing of masks on city streets. I would love nothing more than for things to be normal. However, I cannot in good conscience put any child or staff member in harm's way. Of course, it would be easier to forget all precautions and have the parade as planned. But at the end of the day, I would never forgive myself if anyone got sick.
I realize there are people on both sides of the COVID issue and the wearing of masks. I look at those educational institutions around us and see what they are doing. OU and OSU are both limiting fans and requiring masks to enter games. OSU hosts one of the largest Homecoming parades in the nation and they have cancelled this event. Many professional sports have empty stadiums while others require the wearing of a face covering. Oklahoma City and Putnam City have cancelled all events for two weeks.
I take my position very seriously. I have seen first-hand what this deadly virus can do. I will continue to monitor the Oklahoma COVID map and consult with state and local Health Departments as well as surrounding school leaders. I can live with negative comments and criticism, what I can not live with is the loss of one child or staff member.
In closing, please stay safe and wear a mask.
Best regards,
Steve Stanley
